TB Joshua reacts to gay law in USA

Various reactions have come in the wake of America formally legalising gay marriage across the entirety of its borders but one of the most unusual has sprung from a popular Nigerian cleric.

After the historic announcement, T.B. Joshua tweeted a YouTube video showing a young man allegedly receiving ‘deliverance’ from a ‘homosexual demon’.


The clip titled, ‘Deliverance From Homosexual Demon’ shows a Nigerian from Imo State who identified himself as ‘Tedus’ receiving prayer at the church of T.B. Joshua in Lagos, Nigeria.
“I made him gay; I made him love men,” the young man says after being questioned by one of Joshua’s ministers, the clip clarifying that it was an ‘evil spirit’ speaking, which was allegedly behind his homosexual tendencies. Tedus is subsequently ‘delivered’ and later shares his experiences about how the ‘devil’ of homosexuality had possessed him.

He narrated how, upon his return from a business trip in Asia, he had lodged in a hotel in Kenya where he met some male friends who suggested they go for a swim in the hotel pool. “After swimming, I went back to my room and had a dream,” Tedus recounted. “I dreamt where I saw myself swimming in the same pool with naked men.

When I woke up, I felt as if something entered into me. I started having passion for men.” Upon returning to Cameroon where he was based, Tedus ‘sacked’ his fiancé without any explanation. “I had no passion for her anymore – no more affection. She was astonished and asked so many questions which I couldn’t abswered. On the internet, I discovered so many things on gay websites and began downloading gay pornography. That’s how it started.”

According to Tedus, he saw his newfound homosexual lifestyle as ‘normal’ until his pastor in the church where he worked as a translator called him aside privately. “He told me that I had to go to Nigeria to The SCOAN and that I needed deliverance.” Tedus reluctantly agreed. After making the journey in December 2013, when the time arrived for people to receive prayer in the church service, he described a sense of anger welling within him as one of Joshua’s pastors approached. “When he prayed for me, I lost control,” he described.

“I knew I was talking but I never knew what I was saying.” Since receiving prayer, Tedus testified that all homosexual feelings have left him. “Those feelings for men are no longer there; I have real passion for the opposite sex. I couldn’t control the former passion.” The clip then jumps to almost one year later where Tedus returns, this time with a young lady whom he introduced as his fiancé. “The Bible says that a man ought to be with a woman.

After my deliverance, I travelled to Imo State and there I met this wonderful lady and proposed to her,” he said, with a large smile, testifying that is life has changed ‘tremendously’ since receiving prayer. “My advice is that if you come across somebody that may be having the same problem, you shouldn’t criticise them but rather pray for them,” he said. “People just believe it’s a normal thing; it’s not just ordinary. There is a force or spirit behind it. The only way out of this is deliverance. It is like a virus. Once it gets into you, it is only deliverance from Jesus Christ that can get you out of it.” In his comments, T.B. Joshua quoted Matthew 7:1, stating that Christians should ‘talk salvation, not condemnation’. “God hates sin, not sinners,” he insisted.

“When I say, 'Do not judge so that you will not be judged', I mean we should hate sin, not the sinner because sinners can change. If you have killed a sinner by judging him, there will be no opportunity for change. Sinners can be delivered. We should hate the act, not the people because our battle is not against flesh and blood but against the 'spirit beings' that cause all these acts.”

He then went further to clarify his stance: “The Bible is my standard. If my parents were one, I would not have been given birth to.”

“Lakini baadaye ikawa kawaida, hata nilipokuja kuachana naye, bado alikuwa rafiki yangu na tulikuwa tunaongea vizuri na kupigiana simu kama kawaida ila alikuwa ananiambia ‘unajua una deni, nakudai watoto wangu na nitafanya juu chini ili unilipe’.

“Basi ikawa kawaida yake kuniambia hivyo, wiki chache kabla ya kufariki aliniomba tuonane lakini haikuwezekana kutokana na ratiba zetu kutofautiana.

“Kuna muda huwa nafikiri au mizimu yake inahusika katika hii ishu! (anacheka sana).

“Unajua ile mimba ya Kanumba hata mimi sikuwa tayari kupata mtoto wakati ule, niliona ndiyo kwanza naingia kwenye mapenzi halafu ndiyo nimetoka kuwa miss tu, sasa itakuwaje, lakini huwezi jua labda pengine kwenye ‘abortion’ walivuruga baadhi ya vitu ndiyo maana mpaka leo imekuwa hivi.”

Dewsbury councillor Masood Ahmed said Talha Asmal, 17, was "no different" from other teenagers and that people in the town were "shocked and devastated".

And Asmal's school principal told the Times he was a "typical teenager".

Asmal is believed to have become Britain's youngest suicide bomber in an oil refinery attack south of Baiji.

Social media reports linked to militant group Islamic State (IS) said Asmal, going by the name of Abu Yusuf al-Britani, had taken part in the attack along with three other suicide bombers.

Asmal would be Britain's youngest known suicide bomber. Another West Yorkshire teenager, Hasib Hussein, was almost 19 when he blew himself up on a London bus in the 7 July 2005 attacks.

"Communities are devastated and shocked to hear the news," said Mr Ahmed, a Labour member of Kirklees Council.

He told BBC Radio 5 live there were "no signs, no symptoms" that Asmal had been groomed by extremists online - as his family now believe he was.

"He was no different from any other teenager in terms of being loving, caring, naive, innocent. He loved sport, he was doing OK in school," Mr Ahmed said.

Lorraine Barker, executive principal of Mirfield Free Grammar and Sixth Form, where Asmal was studying, told the Times he was "very quiet and private".

"He didn't draw any attention to himself, he was just a conscientious student," she said.

She said staff and students were in "complete shock" when Asmal travelled to the Middle East.

Asmal's family said it seemed he had been targeted by people "too cowardly to do their own dirty work"

In a statement issued on Sunday, his family said he was a "loving, kind, caring and affable teenager".

"He never harboured any ill will against anybody nor did he ever exhibit any violent, extreme or radical views of any kind," they said.

"Talha's tender years and naivety were, it seems... exploited by persons unknown who, hiding behind the anonymity of the world wide web, targeted and befriended Talha and engaged in a process of deliberate and calculated grooming of him.

"Whilst there it appears that Talha fell under the spell of individuals who continued to prey on his innocence and vulnerability to the point where, if the press reports are accurate, he was ordered to his death by so-called Isis [also known as IS] handlers and leaders too cowardly to do their own dirty work.

"We are all naturally utterly devastated and heartbroken by the unspeakable tragedy that now appears to have befallen us."

The flow of young men and women to warzones in Syria and Iraq continues to be the biggest challenge to Britain's counter-terrorism effort.

Senior officers estimate more than 700 British citizens have now made the journey, some taking on the name "al-Britani" to signify their origins. Half have come back to the UK, posing the risk that they might plan attacks.

BBC research suggests more than 30 are still in the warzones, and possibly as many as 50.

However its estimated a third are not known to police and the security services, making their job of tracking extremists and prioritising those posing the greatest risk much harder.

'Evil' groomers

Shahid Malik, former MP for Dewsbury and a family friend of the Asmals, said: "It is disturbing to see how relaxed he looks in the Isis photographs allegedly taken just prior to his suicide mission.

"He looks at peace. It's like he's ready to go and meet his maker. This is a clear indication of just how successful the evil Isis groomers have been in poisoning and brainwashing Talha and kids like him."

IS has seized large swathes of territory in eastern Syria and across northern and western Iraq.

At least 700 people from the UK have travelled to support or fight for jihadist organisations in the area, with the majority joining IS.

Asmal travelled to Syria with fellow Dewsbury teenager Hassan Munshi.

In a statement, the Home Office said: "Since 2011, we have trained more than 160,000 people working on the front line of our public sector to identify and prevent extremism, excluded nearly 100 preachers of hate - more than any other government - and successfully taken down more than 90,000 pieces of terrorist-related material from the internet.

"We also removed or refused 30 passports in 2013 and 2014 where people were considered to be at risk of travelling to Syria or Iraq."
